The Year of The Setbacks
January 2nd, 2003
Welcome to 2003 setbackers. It has been predicted by the higher powers and some of the lower powers that 2003 will be the year of The Setbacks. With local radio play and upcoming shows The Setbacks are ready to take their postion on top of the Rock echelon. So if you want to be able to say "I saw The Setbacks before they became the rock legends that they are now", you should jump on now. You have until January 11th to find that perfect rock n' roll outfit that matches your quart of 50 because we are ready to rock if you are.
I think Jon Bon Jovi described The Setbacks outlook on life when he said "I've seen a million faces, and I've rocked them all!"
We'll see you at Zaphods.

Shaving Strike
December 19th, 2002
After our CD release show on November 1, I made a promise to the guys that I wouldn't shave again until the Lord of the Rings Two Towers came out in theatres. Today I was finally able to fire up the Philishave!
The moustache comes off when installment three hits theatres.

2002's good and bad...in my opinion
December 17th, 2002
hey guys! i can make lists too...here's my two cents...actually it's more like five or ten...
good records
pedro the lion - control
bionic - deliverance
the greenhornes - dual mono
mooney suzuki - electric sweat
hayden - live at convocation hall
brian jonestown massacre - bravery repitition and noise
sadies - stories often told
the sights - got what we want
jason lowenstein - at sixes and sevens
the breeders - title TK
...too many to count
best surprises
electric eel shock, pedro the lion, the sights
worst surprises
soft canyon
(i love you guys but i miss tricky woo)
best discoveries
the sonics - here are the sonics
(the greatest punk rock album ever made...period)
the asteroid no. 4 - king richard's collectibles
(i think they're called the asteroids now)
worst discoveries
sloan - pretty together
(released in 2001....i know, but i'm still kicking myself for assuming this would be a rock record)
the sonics - 1980 tapes
(after overcoming the excitement of finally finding a sonics album i realize this is a complete massacre of all their best hits done 20 years later by a lineup of the band that contains only one original member...who isn't even the singer. shit.)
good shows
the sights @ the dominion
the dictators @ the dominion
electric eel shock, the datsuns and the warlocks @ la sala rossa
andrew WK and danko jones @ barrymores
the brian jonestown massacre @ casa del popolo (seeing a guitarist quit the band mid-performance after throwing punches at the lead singer was the icing on the cake...weird and cool all at the same time!)
bionic and the bitchin' camaros @ babylon
the sadies @ the black sheep inn (good call trev...)
hayden @ southam hall
white stripes @ kool haus
the constantines and royal city @ babylon
BRMC @ barrymores
CSNY @ air canada centre
paul mccartney @ air canada centre
...the list goes on and on
bad shows
the vines @ kool haus (good record...bad show)
...that's it for *bad* shows. there's some borderline bad shows, but let's not dwell on the negative.
...that's it. so, maybe it isn't really a list but more like steve's musical diarrhea...sue me. if i can turn one person onto one of these fine bands, then that's one less person listening to jenny on a block or whatever it's called.
anyways - keep supporting the little guys and down with KOOL FM!

You don't know what a Orange Twist Raspberry Sourpuss is?!?!?
December 16th, 2002
On friday a couple of us went to Zaphods to see the Million Dollar Marxist and The Sniches. The M$M put out their regular onslaught of thrashing guitars and vocals. Solid. I had never seen the Sniches before. Ignoring the spastic epileptic-like movements of one of the vocalists it was pretty cool. I don't think I would ever buy the CD but I'd see them again.
Saturday was full of different venues. From the "Jonathan G" filled Corel Center, to the "my cell phone is more expensive then yours" place called The Collection, to the "why don't I come here more often" Zaphods. Drinks and good times were had at all the places.
Just to see if anyone reads these little blurbs. Send me your top 5 moments of 2002. Whether it is movies or shows. I'll post the best ones on the site later. Merry Christmas.

First "Top of '02" List
December 16th, 2002
As the year draws to a close, I like many other people with access to a pulpit of any kind, am going to spout my “Tops of the ‘02” list here. It isn’t a music list or anything really specific, just a few highs and lows experienced over the last year.
So here they are, in no particular order:
· Best Show: seeing the Sadies at the Black Sheep Inn. That was an amazing show at a great venue.
· Worst Show: reruns of All in the Family on Prime
· Worst Medical Situation: in the summer I had the worst case of poison ivy that the Appletree Medical Clinic has ever seen. It was both my proudest and most ashamed medical moment ever.
· Best Medical Situation: working long enough in one place to qualify for sick days
· Worst Moment: a friend’s death
· Best Moment: getting engaged to one swell lady
· Best Purchase: a new truck
· Worst Purchase: a new truck
· Most Surprisingly Good Album: Royal City – Alone at the Microphone (threegut records)
· Most Disappointing Album: The Get Up Kids – On A Wire (vagrant)
· Worst Annoyance: the nails popping up in our hardwood floor, ripping most of my grey tube socks
· Best Annoyance: the inability to do anything but play Xbox on the weekends
· Worst TBS Original Movie: (tie) Christmas Rush, Atomic Hurricane
· Best TBS Original Movie: none
That’s about it. If I want to do a top albums of 2002 list I’ll need to do some more thinking. And I hate to do that.

Sad, Sad Day in Rock n' Roll
December 10th, 2002
The Billboard Awards were last night. I didn't watch them but I got the results.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Initially I was so disgusted that the list (more or less) had only four names: Creed, Ashanti, Nickleback, and Puddle of Mudd. Is this the kind of CRAP that people are listening to?
I then became sad for all the people that listen to this music. Do they not know that there is some amazing music out there?
I have now (after some thought) become happy about the situation. I don't want my favorite bands to end up like Korn (for example). Korn, when they first came out, played what they wanted and how they wanted. RAW. Now they suck because they are playing what the radio wants them to play.
Long story short; there is a ton of amazing music out there. All you have to do is find it.

This is how we rock it in the O-dot
December 9th, 2002
A pretty rockin weekend. Busy nights and lazy days.
Saturday a bunch of us went to see The Silver Hearts play Zaphods. If you haven't seen these guys before. Check them out. There are 10 people in the band! They have a tuba, trombone, three guitars, piano, violin, theremin (very cool instrument), harmonica, and a saw player. Yes, I said saw (the kind you cut wood with). They have a girl that plays a saw. Unbelivable the sounds she gets out of the thing. Zaphods was packed and the show was awesome.
After this we stopped by the Fox and the Feather for a pint or two and then it was off to Babylon. A band called Antibalas were playing. The way they describe themselves is "Afro beat". I'm not really sure what that means but I do know that it sounded great. There were 300+ people there and they were all dancing. I'm kicking myself for not buying the CD.
By the time that show ended the night was done and so was I. Walked home and crashed. Another Saturday night for the books. It is going to be hard to top that next weekend.

A Day In The Life Of Chris...
December 9th, 2002
Hello All!
If anyone is interested, my new favourite dude to check out is BUTCH WALKER, the former lead singer in Marvelous 3, and all around rock star.
Check out his site at www.butchwalker.com
Besides producing records for Injected and Bowling For Soup, he's been popping upon liners for everyone all over the place...
Other than that...if anyone went to the Antibalas show on Saturday night, sorry about the drunkeness...which in fact was not helped by one of the sweetest people I've met in a long time, Brett's girlfriend, Natalie...
Thanx for the shooters!
